The Concert Choir is designed as an 8-part mixed choir. About 60% of the members are music majors with the remainder being liberal arts majors of all types. All members read music, obviously, but some are experts and some are on their way to becoming experts! Rehearsal is entirely a cappella in terms of learning notes—-most musicians enjoy being in a choir of like-talented musicians since musical progress is generally fast and exciting.
The history of the choir over the last 30 years includes performances at two national ACDA conventions and numerous divisional and state conventions.....this alone speaks for itself.
I look forward to meeting you soon and hearing you sing your audition. Look for information on 'choral audition sign up' during your first day of orientation. Please prepare an art song—something which shows off your training and talent. Sight reading is part of the audition—you will be asked to sing a melody from sight using whatever technique you have been trained with (solfege is nice but not the only way of demonstrating reading ability). |
The choir motto for nearly three decades has been the statement by JS Bach:
Music's only purpose should be for the glory of God and the recreation of the human spirit!
In accordance with these mottos, the Concert Choir's tradition has been skillful performance of the highest quality
repertoire through disciplined, rigorous rehearsal and commitment to the choir's
artistic and spiritual goals. The choir is open to all Wheaton students regardless
of major or classification--membership is based on vocal talent, skill at reading
music, personal character and eagerness to help the choir achieve success. Experience
in excellent choral programs and especially in all-state or honors choirs is considered
essential for membership in this select choir. Concert Choir rehearses 4:30-6p
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and is conducted by Paul Wiens, Professor of Music. |
